A Calgary man has been charged with sexually assaulting three young girls in alleged incidents dating back to 1998.

The victims, who were distant relatives or friends of the accused, were between four and 12 years old at the time of the alleged sexual assaults, said Calgary police on Tuesday.

Police began looking into the cases when one of the victims came forward in June. A subsequent investigation located two additional victims.

Ronald A. Sayers, 53, was charged on Friday with three counts of sexual interference with a child under 16, and three counts of sexual assault.

According to a report, Sayers is on a leave of absence from his job at the Alberta Children's Hospital. Police said they're not looking at his workplace as part of their ongoing investigation.
