At a time when many legions across the country are seeing their membership dwindle, one Calgary branch is celebrating new life.
Legion Branch 286 was facing closure last fall until members managed to find a new location, just weeks before they had to go. However, the new building was in bad shape and required a lot of volunteers, work and money to fix up.
"It was a disaster area when we started," said 85-year-old member Raymond Gale, one of the many volunteers who fixed up the new building. "Five of us walked in that front door and we said, 'If we can make this into a Legion, we can work miracles.' Well, we've worked miracles."
Dozens of volunteers worked to revamp the space by painting, carpeting and nailing up dart boards.
The branch is still trying to raise $10,000 to renovate its kitchen.
