Police are investigating an altercation that took place at the Calgary Remand Centre Monday night.

Just after 6 p.m. MT, police say they were called to the centre after a 24-year-old man, who was placed in a cell with two 20 year olds, became involved in an argument.

"A short time later, after placement into that cell, he was checked by cell guards and was found unconscious on his mattress," said Duty Insp. Jim Leung. "EMS was alerted, of course, and the subject was checked…. His injuries were determined as life threatening at the time."

Leung said the man has severe head injuries. He's currently under guard recovering in hospital.

Police have conducted a preliminary investigation and are now waiting to interview the injured man.
