The Epcor Centre is no more.
Four years after the sponsorship agreement with the power utility expired, the performing arts centre in downtown Calgary has finally removed the name Epcor from its signage.
CEO Johann Zeitsmann said the centre decided to make the change despite the lack of a new agreement with a title sponsor.
The agreement with Epcor, which expired in 2010, was worth $400,000 per year to the centre. Zeitsmann said the centre was in talks with a potential title sponsor for two years, but was unable to reach a deal.
Zeitsmann said the centre will announce its new name in the autumn and it will reflect what the centre has become.
"We have got these great, world-class resident companies in our space," he said, "but we also do a tremendous amount of work with the community and a very diverse group of presentations in addition to what our resident companies do and our name doesn't necessarily reflect that."
Zeitsman said the centre needs capital improvements and a new title sponsor is key part of that funding.
