Calgary alderman John Mar to seek federal seat
Mar to remain on council until nomination call for federal seat
A Calgary alderman is making the bid to run for a federal seat that will soon be up for grabs in a byelection.
Longtime Conservative supporter John Mar, first elected as alderman for Ward 8 in 2007, confirmed he will be pursuing the Conservative Party nomination for Calgary-Centre.
"This is an opportunity that's arisen," Mar said. "Certainly, it came as a complete surprise to me when Lee Richardson stepped down in the House of Commons two weeks ago. "
Richardson, announced at the end of May he is taking a job as Alberta Premier Alison Redford's principal secretary.
Mar says he will continue in his role as member of council until there's a nomination call.
"This is something that has always been a dream of mine," he said. "I'm excited to have the possibility of joining Stephen Harper's team."
