Calgarians, a lot of them, got to dive into a tasty Halifax treat as the King of Donair set up a pop-up shop Friday — a way to unofficially test the waters.

Halifax is the self-described birthplace of the donair, a meaty pita sandwich. The city even declared donairs the "official food of the city" in December.

Adam Wilkie took a day off work and drove two hours from Crowsnest Pass to get a taste. He also waited for two more hours in line.

"They are not the same," Wilkie said of local donairs.

"You can't get them anywhere else, you can only get them back east or from an outfit like this that is from back east."

Hundreds lined up at Meraki Supply Co. in Hillhurst Friday afternoon, but if that dose of meat and sauce wasn't enough, the King will have another pop-up shop on Saturday at Sunshine Village.
