A water main break at a northwest Calgary strip mall is causing water to pool and spill out into the parking lot.

The fire department was called out to the Safeway at Brentwood Village Mall around 6 a.m. MT Sunday for reports of flooding.

"In some locations it's over a foot deep," said Ernie Molineaux, battalion Chief with the Calgary Fire Department. "The loading dock apparently is full to the top. It is quite a substantial flow of water."

Crews quickly saw the problem had spread to the mall and out into the parking lot.

It's believed an eight-inch water main broke, which is why there is so much water coming into the building.

Molineaux says city crews are trying to shut off the water and limit the damage.

It's not yet clear whether the mall will be open for business today.
