A Calgary senior severely beaten in his northwest home has died in hospital, police said.

Police were called to a home on Royal Oak Drive in the northwest around 2 a.m. on Sunday. Officers say they found Alexander Potoroka, 65, in critical condition. He died late Monday.

Police have declared Potoroka's death the city's second homicide of 2013.

Shaun Peter Desautels, 42, has been charged with uttering threats and aggravated assault. Police are looking into upgrading the charges.

"The accused and the victim were residing in the residence where the offence took place. The deceased owned the property and rented a room to the accused," said Staff Sgt. Grant Miller.

"I think other people were present during the altercation and attempted to intercede."

Desautels' record includes at least six assault convictions since 1995, including a 2008 aggravated assault conviction for choking a 13-year-old relative, for which he was sentenced to three years in jail.
