Balcony railing falls from Beltline highrise
Building Approval Department was called to assess structure
Calgary firefighters were called out Sunday afternoon after a balcony railing fell from an upper floor of a Beltline high rise.
A one-block area around 14th Avenue and First Street S.E. was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic while crews investigated.
They discovered a balcony rail covered by a tarp had blown to the ground from an upper floor of a building under construction.
Firefighters entered the building to ensure the other tarps and railings were secured.
Members of the Building Approval Department as well as construction officials were called out to assess the structure.
The area will remain closed until officials are sure there is no danger of anything else falling off.
Sunday's high winds are believed to have been the cause of the incident.
