Cochrane RCMP are warning Albertans to be prepared for what can go wrong before heading into the backcountry this summer.
The reminder comes after a 28-year-old Calgary man was reported missing on May 21. RCMP say the lone man had travelled far off-road with his Jeep into the backcountry when the Jeep became stuck.
After trying several times to free the Jeep, the man decided to walk.
RCMP say he walked through the woods all night to a rural air strip, where a conservation officer from Kananaskis Emergency Services located him.
The dangers of being unprepared for such an emergency can be life-threatening, RCMP say.
Cell coverage in most backcountry areas is limited or non-existent.
Police say people should tell a family or friend about where they are heading in case anything goes wrong.
