Albertans looking to cast a line this long weekend can do so for free after the online licensing system was overwhelmed with requests on Friday.

While teams are working to get the online system up and running, the issues aren't expected to be resolved until the end of the weekend and the province says it wants Albertans to be able to get outdoors and enjoy the weekend.

"I know that the long weekend has gotten off to a frustrating start for many anglers in Alberta," said Robin Campbell, Alberta's Environment and Sustainable Resources Minister. "I would personally rather be fishing that standing in a line up or on my computer. That's why we are going to waive the need for a licence this weekend and let people just start enjoying the outdoors."

The free fishing weekend will run from May 16 to 19.

While licences won't be required for the period, all other fishing regulations will be in effect and enforced.
