Earlier this week, 12 of Calgary's top chefs got together for a little friendly chowder competition in support of the Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise program. The Chowder Chowdown had some delicious, sustainable Ocean Wise chowders but if you missed the event, the Calgary Eyeopener's food and nutrition columnist, Julie Van Rosendaal, has compiled a list of some of the most delicious bowls of chowder in town.

Catch at the Hyatt
Catch is known for its seafood and Chef Kyle Groves' New England-style clam chowder is no exception. On Fridays in the Oyster Bar, you can get a bowl for only $6.

The Oak Room & Rimrock at the Fairmont Palliser
The Fairmont Palliser's famous clam chowder — a classic, traditional version — is on the menu at the Oak Room as well as the Rimrock. They've used the same recipe for nearly 100 years and it has been served by the same two cooks for the last 20 years.

Thomsons at the Hyatt
Chef Rebecca House won the Peoples' Choice award at the Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown for her classic creation. On the menu at Thomson's you'll find a Manhattan Seafood Chowder made with fresh scallops, clams and shrimp in a tomato herb broth with Alberta-grown Agria potatoes, fennel and zucchini.

Chef/owner Dwayne Ennest serves up a delicious, creamy East Coast seafood chowder with yazu oil. On Wednesdays, there's free corkage so you can bring your own wine to enjoy with the meal.

Billingsgate Fish Co.
The cafe in the Billingsgate market is known for its fish dishes, including made-to-order bouillabaisse and creamy Boston clam chowder.

They're known for their burger and whisky list but Buchanan's also serves up a tasty Cajun seafood chowder, served with amazing biscuits. Their signature salmon comes from a sustainable farm with which they've had a relationship for 18 years — after the daily fillets, the rest goes into the chowder.

Redwater Rustic Grille
It's not a traditional seafood chowder but the roasted tomato and corn soup with rotisserie chicken and cilantro cream is hearty enough to resemble a chowder.

The winner of the Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown was Chef Darren Maclean from downtownfood, with his Asian-inspired chowder. It's not a staple on the menu but you can bet the daily soup feature at downtownfood will be unique and tasty.
