Theatre Calgary is celebrating Christmas early thanks to a million-dollar gift from a pair of philanthropists.

The donation, earmarked for this year’s production of A Christmas Carol, came from Cal and Edith Wenzel, owners of Shane Homes.

The couple runs the Cal Wenzel Family Foundation

Artistic Director Dennis Garnhum said the generous gift — the largest the company has ever received — has made this year's production a dream come true.

"They made a profound difference to our experience because we could built it with great confidence, that we had the support and that we could make costumes bigger, brighter  and more beautiful," he said.

This year marks the 25th time Theatre Calgary has staged the holiday classic.
