1 dead in Ponoka vehicle crash, 2nd victim faces charges
Police say speed, alcohol considered factors in the collision
One person is dead and charges are pending against a passenger after a fatal vehicle collision near Ponoka.
Around 9:35 a.m. MT Sunday, Ponoka RCMP received a complaint of a stolen 2003 Chrysler Sebring from a residence in the town.
The vehicle had been left running to warm up and was unattended at the time of the alleged theft.
At 9:45 a.m., RCMP received a 911 call about a single-vehicle crash on Range Road 254 near Meniak Road, roughly 12 kilometres north of Ponoka.
Both the driver and passenger were reported to be trapped in the vehicle, which had left the snow-covered gravel road and rolled several times.
Ponoka RCMP, EMS and fire crews responded but the 19-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene.
The 18-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle involved in the crash was the same vehicle reported stolen earlier and the victims were the only people in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Alcohol and speed are considered factors in the collision, police say.
Both the driver and passenger were from Maskwacis.
The name of the driver is not being released at this time.
