YVR power outage delays departures at Vancouver airport
Passengers reported long lines for security and delayed departures after 45 minute power outage
A power outage at the domestic terminal of Vancouver International Airport created long lines and delays for departing flights on Friday morning.
The power went out around 7 a.m. PT for about 45 minutes, shutting off the lights at the domestic terminal.
Originally the airport said flights would not be affected, but one passenger on an Air Canada flight scheduled to depart for the U.S. at 8 a.m. reported the flight was delayed by more than an hour.
Other passengers reported long lines of people waiting to get through security screening snaking though the terminal.
The airport says it does not know why the power failed and why back-up generators failed to kick in. BC Hydro says the problem appears to be an internal issue for the airport.
Staff say they are working with airlines and business partners to manage the impact of the outage and are advising customers to check the website before heading to the airport.
The lines appeared to be eliminated by 9:30 a.m. but the extent of the flight delays remained unclear, as the delays reported by passengers were not reflected on the YVR website.
