Emergency response crews recovered a man's body from beneath the cliffs near Vancouver's Wreck Beach yesterday, police have confirmed.

RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger says the body was spotted partially buried in earth near Trail 6 on the edge of the UBC campus yesterday.

"It was in a very precarious position. We had to use an abundance of caution using geotechnical experts and search and rescue experts to assess the scene," said Grainger.

Police are investigating the possibility the man may have been camping on the ridge above the beach when it collapsed during recent heavy rain.

The sandy cliffs in the area have collapsed in the past, forcing the closure of trails.

Police say they hope to identify the man as soon as possible and they don't believe the man's death is suspicious.

Crews will be back on the scene today to confirm no other bodies are in the debris. They warn the cliffs and trails in the area remain unstable.
