Police on Vancouver Island are investigating after a woman was found dead on a hiking trail Friday evening.

The woman's body was discovered at about 7:50 p.m. near the Galloping Goose Trail, between Atkins Avenue and Wale Road in Colwood, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island approximately 10 kilometres west of Victoria.

Police say the trail is closed until further notice.

Police have released few details, but are calling the woman's death a homicide. They have not revealed the cause of death or how long the body may have been on the trail before being discovered.

The woman has not been identified.

Police say the person or persons responsible are still at large, and are urging the public to be aware of their surroundings.
