The body of a female discovered Monday in Warner Loat Park in Burnaby has been identified as 27-year old Carla Marie Smith of Vancouver.

She was known to police and involved in the sex trade industry.

Smith also went by the names Carmen or Justine and was last seen last week in the area of Hastings Street and Gore Avenue, CBC News learned Tuesday.

It's believed her body had not been in the park long and investigators were still not certain if she had been killed in the spot where she was found, police said.

Police have not yet determined the cause of death.

The Integrated Homicide team said a number of women's bodies have been found in local parks during the past couple of years, but there are no other obvious links among the cases.

The discovery of the body of a Caucasian woman in her 40s in Kirkstone Park in North Vancouver Feb. 2 is almost certainly not connected to the Smith case, said RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr.

"We're comfortable, based on the information we know now, to say there's no link between these two," said Carr.
