3. A watermelon eating contest and a garlic festival

Okay... who wouldn't want to be the River District Watermelon Eating Champion?? It's a title worth having... and you can have fun going for it. You might want to bring a bib as it promises to be messy on the path to victory, and leave your dining table manners at home.

The Metro Vancouver Garlic Festival is on at the Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond, to celebrate this pungent vegetable in all its glorious forms. It's the 6th annual garlic festival, with more than 450 kilograms of organic, artisan garlic for purchase, plus cooking demos and lots of entertainment. You can also learn to grow your own bulbs. Vampires are not welcome.

5. Go jump in a pool!

There are only a few more days to enjoy Vancouver's outdoor public pools, so get out there with your towel, your sunscreen and your best backstroke! The weather promises to be fine. Bring your kids, bring your books, and make some waves.
