Vulnerable critters at risk as wildlife centre faces cash crunch

Elizabeth Melnick has helped nurse thousands of injured wild animals back to health. But the cost of keeping her Abbotsford wildlife centre open has become a major financial strain.

Elizabeth's Wildlife Centre in Abbotsford rescues dozens of animals each day

Elizabeth Melnick has helped nurse thousands of injured wild animals back to health.

But she says her animal rescue centre in Abbotsford is very close to shutting its doors because of a lack of funding.

Melnick has run Elizabeth's Wildlife Centre since 1986, but with a possible closure looming, she worries about the animals, the volunteers and occasional paid students who help care for the animals.

CBC 'South of the Fraser' reporter Dan Burritt visited the centre and filed these photos. You can listen to his radio piece by clicking on the 'Listen' button in the upper left corner.
