Very stormy weekend for B.C.'s South Coast

Friday's rain was just the first in a series of systems that will hit B.C.'s coast this weekend, says CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe.

Wind, rainfall warnings for Metro Vancouver area

The rain will taper to showers, and we will catch a bit of a break this evening, but Friday's rain was just the first in a series of systems that will hit B.C.'s coast this weekend, says CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe.

An early-season, full-on storm is approaching quickly though, and this one is bringing serious rainfall and gusty winds. Rainfall warnings are in place for Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound and the Fraser Valley for 40 mm to 75 mm from Saturday to Sunday. Some local regions could see as much as 120 mm.

A wind warning has also been issued for Saturday afternoon with gusts up to 90 km/h forecast for Metro Vancouver and portions of the Fraser Valley.

Interestingly, rather than tapping into subtropical moisture from the Hawaiian Islands region à la Pineapple Express, this jet stream is actually tapping into moisture all the way from tropical storm Pabuk near the Japanese coast.

Another wave of moisture will arrive for Sunday morning just as Saturday's begins to taper off. Winds will be strong for both weekend days — 60 km/h to 80 km/h — and advisories or warnings may be issued or expanded.

Snow levels are also dropping, and we could be looking at a few centimetres for highway passes at higher elevations.

Catch Johanna's full forecasts weekdays on CBC News Vancouver at 5 and 6.
