A garbage truck is stopped on Grandview Highway at the spot were it hit and killed an elderly pedestrian Monday.

A 79-year old Vancouver woman has died after she was hit by a garbage truck Monday morning while she walked across Grandview Highway.

Police said the woman was jaywalking at about 7 a.m. PT when she was struck. She later died from her injuries.

The accident is a wake-up call for both drivers and pedestrians, said Vancouver police spokesman Const. Lindsey Houghton.

"Everything indicates she was crossing mid-block, so, outside intersections, early morning with the [rainy] weather," said Houghton. "Everyone needs to be more attentive."

Houghton said the driver of the truck was cooperating with the investigation and that speed and alcohol weren't factors.

It is Vancouver's fourth traffic-related death this year. All the deceased were pedestrians.
