Vancouver's 5th homicide victim of 2013 identified

Police have identified Vancouver's fifth homicide victim of 2013 as 32-year-old La Van Truong Phan.

Police have identified Vancouver's fifth homicide victim of 2013 as 32-year-old La Van Truong Phan.

Phan was was the victim of a targeted shooting in East Vancouver just after midnight Thursday night.

Vancouver Police say officers responded to reports of gunshots in the 7200 block of Victoria Drive at 12:30 a.m. PT.

They found Phan with gunshot wounds in the backyard of a home. He died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Police say it is still too early in the investigation to determine motive, but the victim is known to police and the attack appears to be targeted.

Phan is associated with gangs and the drug trade, police said.
