Pana Papas Merchant named to the Senate
Prime Minister Jean Chretien has named Saskatchewan businesswoman and volunteer Pana Papas Merchant to the Senate.
Merchant is a teacher and businesswoman who has long been active in voluntary and charitable organizations in Saskatchewan. She is married to lawyer Tony Merchant.
She is among three women appointed by the Prime Minister. The other two named to the chamber are Maria Chaput from Manitoba and Pierrette Ringuette-Maltais of New Brunswick.
There are 63 liberals who sit in the Senate, 30 senators are Tories, one is a member of the Alliance party and four sit as independents.
