An 18-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and various weapons offenses following a shooting Tuesday night outside a South Vancouver elementary school.

A 19-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after shots were fired in the area of 52nd Avenue and St. George Street, next to John Henderson Elementary School and Sunset Park, just after 6 p.m. PT.

Vancouver police Const. Brian Montague said the shooter's intended target was likely another 18-year-old man, who walked into Vancouver General Hospital with the wounded woman shortly after the incident.

The SUV police found parked outside the hospital was damaged from bullets, Montague said.

"The indications are that the shooting was targeted. But the woman that was injured... is not believed to be the target of the shooting. The two men involved, it's believed, have had an ongoing dispute," Montague said.

Hartej Singh Kang, 18, has now been charged with attempted murder, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and two counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound or disfigure.

Police arrested Kang Tuesday night at around 11:30 p.m. in a home near the elementary school.

He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court next week.
