One man is in police custody following an alleged carjacking in Maple Ridge.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said they received a report of a woman screaming near the area of 124 Avenue and 224 Street around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday night.

Within a few minutes of investigating the robbery, police received a call of a vehicle rollover a short distance away.

"We were quickly putting pieces of the puzzle together," said Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk, media relations officer for Ridge Meadows RCMP.

A black SUV had crashed into a house on Laity Street, near 124 Avenue.

Gresiuk said as police attended the rollover, they found that the occupants were gone. so they set up a perimeter and called in the dog unit unit to help track the suspect.

"We quickly started to put together who this person was and some of our street intelligence members knowing people in our area, and who should be and shouldn't be, were able to locate the suspect," said Gresiuk.

She said they arrested a man quite a distance away from the scene of the crime, who is very well known to police.

RCMP are recommending charges of robbery and failure to comply with probation.

Gresiuk said she didn't have have any information on the woman's injuries or the condition of the house struck by the vehicle.
