An SUV crashed into several cars in the busy parking lot of an elementary school near Victoria Tuesday afternoon, before hitting the schoolyard fence.

The accident happened In View Royal, B.C. as students were leaving for the day.

Several ambulances were sent to the scene at View Royal Elementary school,  but B.C. Ambulance says no one was hurt.

"Typically there are tons of kids on the sidewalk right there, but thank God nobody was hurt and all the cars were empty at the time," said Ashley MacDonald. "It could have been horrible."

The driver and her daughter — the only other occupant of the SUV — walked to an ambulance and were taken to hospital.

MacDonald said the female driver appeared to panic and hit the gas instead of the brake. She said the SUV careened up onto a sidewalk, then crashed into three other cars before hitting the schoolyard fence.

Helmcken Road was closed for about half an hour as police investigated.
