Suspicious package triggers B.C. ferry alert
The discovery of a suspicious package caused the cancellation of some BC Ferries' sailings between B.C.'s Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island Sunday afternoon, but police eventually determined there was no threat.
The 3 p.m. PT sailing of the Coastal Renaissance from the Tsawwassen terminal to Swartz Bay, north of Victoria, and the vessel's scheduled 5 p.m. return trip were affected by what BC Ferries described as "a security incident."
Spokeswoman Deborah Marshall told CBC News that a suspicious package was found on the vessel at about 2:40 p.m. while it was docked in Tsawwassen and that the ferry had been evacuated.
The RCMP bomb squad was called in to deal with the object, which Delta police described as "overtly suspicious," but provided no more details on its appearance.
The bomb squad investigated, however, and found that it was not an explosive device.
