Illegal Okanagan Lake cabanas taken down

Beachfront sheds and cabanas in B.C.'s central Okanagan were torn down Thursday, after being declared illegal by the District of Lake Country.
More than a dozen sheds and cabanas were built on the shores of Okanagan Lake years ago, dotting the beach north of Kelowna.
But District employees took down the old sheds and loaded them onto a truck Thursday, before raking up a beach area.
District Councillor Lisa Cameron said the structures had to go.
Blair Ireland of Lake Country says, "This is not a democracy." (CBC)"They [residents] don't own the beach, they don't pay waterfront taxes and yet they have tried to plunk down sheds and their lawn furniture and tried to claim it as their own, " she said.
Some people whose cabanas were taken down by the District are fuming.
Blair Ireland's neighbours lost sheds that have been on the beach for years.
"There is no consultation with the community as was promised when the community took over this beach in 2006," he said.
"Right now, Lake Country is not a democracy."
The District now says it will go after illegal docks, starting in September.
