Police say the man whose charred remains were found in South Surrey Sunday was known to police, but had no known gang affiliations.

Cpl. Adam MacIntosh, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police have identified the dead man as 29-year-old Amritpal Saran of Delta.

MacIntosh said that at this point in the investigation, the circumstances around Saran's death are "a mystery."

"Just over 24 hours into this investigation, IHIT investigators and the Surrey RCMP are beginning the task of tracing the last days and hours of Mr. Saran's life in an effort to determine the motive and who is responsible for his death," MacIntosh said in a written statement.

Saran's badly-burned body was discovered in the 12100 block of Colebrook Road Sunday, and police are asking members of the public who were in the area that morning to contact police.

Police are not releasing the cause of Saran's death.
