Nanaimo RCMP made one of their largest marijuana busts when they arrested a man with more than 22 kilograms of marijuana at the Departure Bay ferry terminal on Friday.
Const. Gary O'Brien says plainclothes officers had been tailing the 48-year-old suspect for several days as part of an investigation spanning several months into the transportation of pot from Nanaimo to Yukon.
When it appeared the suspect was leaving the island, police swooped in and arrested him at the Departure Bay ferry terminal.
"They searched his car and they found five large cardboard boxes that contained vacuum sealed packages of marijuana, about 50 pounds worth," said O'Brien, who estimated the pot has a street value of $120,000.
The suspect, who has no previous record, was released on a promise to appear in court in May. Police say they are recommending a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking to Crown prosecutors.
