Abbotsford Police say the city has already recorded its 100th traffic collision this year, and they can't believe some of the excuses bad drivers are giving for their behaviour.

Const. Ian MacDonald says most of the collisions involved speeding vehicles. In addition, over 35 per cent involved a vehicle attempting a left turn and almost one quarter of the crashes involved a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian or cyclist.

MacDonald says after hearing some ridiculous excuses from speeding drivers, police are launching a campaign to persuade drivers to slow down.

On Monday a 22-year-old woman was clocked going twice the posted limit of 50 km/h after she just had her licence returned from a suspension, said MacDonald.

"Her excuse for driving at such an outrageous speed was that having not driven for a period of time, she wanted to re-acclimatize herself to the driving experience and thought it would be good to test her limits on wet roads"

A short time later, a 30-year-old woman with her young child in the back seat was clocked going 130 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. She then blew through a stop sign before pulling over, said MacDonald.

"She said she was speeding because her infant was hungry and was cranky and crying. So her remedy for that was to put herself, her infant and other people on the roadway at risk in order that she could get home and feed the infant," he said.
