Police say a 25-year-old Surrey, B.C., man is facing seven charges after a 17-year-old girl reported an attempted abduction to police in Maple Ridge Saturday.
Ian James William Campbell was arrested Tuesday in Vancouver, shortly after police in Maple Ridge released a photo of the suspect and began receiving tips from the public.
Campbell has now been charged with kidnapping, choking, assault, assault with a weapon, producing an imitation firearm, unlawful confinement and auto theft.
Campbell has a criminal history stretching back to 2005, when he stole a car and led police in a high-speed pursuit that ended in the death of a teenage passenger.
Campbell was convicted of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and operating a vehicle in police pursuit.
He was given a 52-month prison term, minus 20 months for the time he spent in jail awaiting trial.
Community came together
Insp. David Fleugel said the current alleged-kidnapping case is complex and ongoing, but he credits the community with helping the police to quickly identify and locate a suspect.
"I would again like to thank all citizens who provided information that allowed investigators a chance to solve this incident so fast," Fleugel said in a written statement.
"It speaks to the great relationship Ridge Meadows RCMP has with their citizens, and how we all can pull together to keep our communities safe."
Police were seeking a suspect who allegedly approached a 17-year-old girl Saturday night outside Westgate Mall, and asked her to help him start his car.
The suspect then allegedly produced a gun and made the girl drive him in her own vehicle to a secluded location, where she was attacked and beaten.
The victim said she grabbed some jewelry off of the man who attacked her. (RCMP)She ripped a piece of jewelry off her attacker and escaped to a nearby home. The suspect then drove away in her car.
Police said media attention about the assault brought in tips from several other women, who reported being approached in a similar manner by a man near Westgate Mall.
Police investigators were then able to isolate a set of likely photos of the suspect from mall security cameras and release a photograph of the piece of jewelry the 17-year-old girl said she grabbed off the suspect.
Ridge Meadows RCMP said Campbell appeared in court Thursday and remains in custody.
