B.C. pot advocates keep eye on Wash. legalization plans

Officials in Washington hope to have the framework for growing and distributing pot in place by the summer. (Ted S. Warren/Associated Press)Marijuana advocates in Canada are closely watching how Washington will regulate the production and sale of marijuana.
The state's governor and attorney general met with the U.S. federal attorney on Tuesday in the hopes of avoiding a legal battle over the issue.
Philipe Lucas, a long-time marijuana decriminalization advocate in Victoria, says those talks are being watched closely on this side of the border.
He believes the movement to decriminalize pot in B.C. will be strengthened by Washington's initiatives.
“The more our laws and bylaws can mirror each other, the easier the integration we're going to have in the inevitable legalization of recreational adult use of cannabis,” Lucas said.
Washington hopes to start issuing licenses for the production and sale of marijuana by the summer.
