About 100 people gathered at the Jericho Sailing Centre in Vancouver Saturday in another effort to stop the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard station..

The federal government announced last summer the station would close as part of a program of cost-saving measures across the country.

Then earlier this month, Ottawa announced a three-person inshore team will be set up in Stanley Park to offer rescue services in the summer months.

But many, including B.C. NDP Leader Adrian Dix, B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins and Vancouver Centre MP Hedy Fry, who were at the rally Saturday, say that's not enough.

Area resident Darren Sutherland, who was at the rally, says it wouldn't take much money required to keep the station open and help protect lives.

"It's not a huge expense to keep it open. I've heard it's less than a million dollars a year," said Sutherland. "I have two young children and they'll probably grow up sailing here as well, so it's definitely a public safety issue and a family issue."

On Friday, staff for Premier Christy Clark posted a video statement about the station on YouTube in which Clark says the shutdown represents “a dangerous drop in service.”

The base is scheduled to close in the spring.
