B.C. death in custody sparks demand for inquest

A 47-year-old man died from injuries sustained at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre last month. (B.C. Corrections Branch)A B.C. civil liberties group is calling for an inquest into the death of a man who was fatally injured while in custody in Prince George, B.C.
Paul Gerard Judge died in hospital on Christmas Day after he’d been sent to the hospital Dec. 20 suffering undisclosed injuries sustained at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre.
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association spokeswoman Micheal Vonn says inquests should be mandatory for all in-custody deaths.
“Independent scrutiny of police and prison officials’ conduct is absolutely critical to ensure the public's confidence in these systems, and accountability,” Vonn told CBC News.
The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating what happened, and says a final decision about an inquest will be made by the Chief Coroner.
Judge, 47, had been facing eight charges, including attempted murder in connection to an incident last month.
He was accused of shooting at a vehicle, and setting his house on fire.
Judge was a former employee at the Lakeland Mills sawmill in Prince George.
