A rural Prince George neighborhood is threatening to separate from the city if residents' concerns about a proposed women's addictions recovery centre are ignored.

Residents in the Haldi Lake Road area say the 30-bed facility on nearby Leslie Road would negatively impact the look and feel of their neighborhood.

"We want to protect the nature of our neighborhood and we want to protect what it is, just like you wouldn't want an industrial complex to come into your neighborhood,” said Jack Nylund, who built his home in the area 40 years ago.

"This is a business operation."

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of B.C. ruled in favour of the Haldi Lake Road residents and forced the city to overturn a zoning amendment for the recovery centre property.

The court ruled the city violated its official community plan.

City council is now considering changing the official community plan so that the centre can be built.

Nylund says the neighborhood will look into leaving the city if that happens.

"If you have no voice in the city management and governance — you know, we tried to work through the system — what other recourse would a normal person follow?"

A public hearing on changing the community plan is slated for January.
