Rutland Senior Secondary in Kelowna, B.C., was evacuated because of a fire Friday morning.
Larry Paul, secretary-treasurer with the Central Okanagan School District students and staff were told to leave the building just before 10:30 a.m. PT.
The fire started in one of the bathrooms near the school's gymnasium, and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it caused any extensively damage to the building, said Paul.
"The smoke was actually from a toilet roll dispenser. Those units are plastic so when they do catch fire they tend to create a lot of smoke. So it's a fairly small fire but it appeared to be extensive because of the amount of smoke," he said.
The fire at Rutland Senior Secondary didn't cause any major damage, confirms School District 23. (Central Okanagan Schoool District)Some students reported they could smell smoke in the hallways before leaving, and a photo taken as students filed out of the school showed black smoke at the top of the hallway.
Everyone was told to gather at the nearby Rutland Middle School gymnasium, and Paul said students and staff would be allowed back into the school around noon.
