The family of a woman airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car while jogging in Surrey, B.C., on Monday night is encouraging the driver to turn themselves in.

Two women who had just finished a running clinic at a nearby Running Room store were hit while crossing the intersection of 152 Street and 32nd Avenue at 7:50 p.m. PT.

Shelley Lammers, 51, was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, including a head laceration, while Nola Carson, 54, was taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

Lammers' mother Sally Rossi, who is also a nurse, says her daughter sustained serious injuries.

"She has a head injury with a bleed, she has fractured ribs with a pneumo-thorax — that's a collapsed lung — she has a lacerated liver and two vertebrae are broken but she has movement," Rossi said.

"So we believe the spinal cord is intact."

Rossi says her daughter can't remember the incident but her friend she says saw everything.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann says the women were dressed to be seen at night.

"They appeared to be wearing reflective running suits. At least one of them was wearing a headlamp."

Police are looking for a white crossover-type vehicle, and are asking the driver to come forward to police.

"No matter what the reason was for not stopping, it is in your best interest to come forward now as opposed to us finding you later," said Cpl. Bert Paquet.

Other hit and run incidents

The hit and run is one of several in recent weeks. Paquet says bad weather and darkness make the roads a more dangerous place.

"Too often we see drivers not adjust their driving behaviors to reflect the changing road conditions," he said.

"Driving is a complex task, and in poorer, darker weather it is more important than ever to slow down and be extra vigilant. Pedestrians also need to be aware of these conditions and take steps to ensure that they are as visible as possible."

On Sunday, one woman was killed in the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Prince Edward Street in East Vancouver and another woman was killed in Mission while walking near 14th Avenue and Caribou Street.

In October, a child was struck near the intersection of 82 Avenue and 154B Street in Surrey while crossing in front of a school bus.

In September, a man was hit near a Sikh Temple on 130 Street in Surrey while operating a leaf blower.
