Strike closes Vancouver Community College Wednesday
SFU also hit by CUPE walkout but university plans to remain open

CUPE's job action Wednesday has prompted the one-day closing of Vancouver Community College. (CUPE)There will be no classes at either of Vancouver Community College’s two campuses Wednesday after unionized support staff announced they would stage a one-day walkout.
Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees are also taking strike action at Simon Fraser University campuses in Burnaby and Vancouver Wednesday, but that school plans to remain open at its campuses in Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver. The university warns on its website that some operations and scheduled classes might be affected by the walkout.
VCC spokeswoman Helen Carkner said the college’s administration is working with the faculty association, "to identify ways to assist students in making up any lost work or other affected activity."
CUPE says the 1,000 support staff at SFU and the 420 workers at VCC have been without a contract since 2010.
The union is also holding a rally in downtown Vancouver Wednesday to draw attention to the disputes.
CUPE staged similar job action and rallies Oct. 4 at six B.C. universities.
