UBC teaching assistants have served 72-hour strike notice. (University of B.C.)University of B.C. teaching assistants have served 72-hour strike notice that may have them taking job action on Monday at the Vancouver campus.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees, representing 2,300 teaching assistants, tutors, markers and English language instructors, has been in negotiations for more than two years and in mediation since April after the last contract expired in 2010.
Union official Trish Everett says the call for strike action reflects the growing frustration with progress in talks, and one of the main issues is that student employees want some job security in their final years as grad students.
Meanwhile, CUPE has also served strike notice on Vancouver Community College, where 420 support workers will refuse overtime on Monday and stage a one-day walkout on Tuesday, with more rotating walkouts to follow.
