A south Surrey man convicted in the hit-and-run death of a woman in White Rock has been sentenced to two years in jail and three years probation.
Kyle Danyliuk was being chased by police in May 2011 when he drove through a red light and struck Marilyn Laursen, 56.
Danyliuk, now 20, pleaded guilty to four charges including dangerous driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident. He was driving without a license and being chased by a White Rock RCMP officer when he struck and killed Laursen and left another woman injured.
Kyle Danyliuk pleaded guilty to four charges. (CBC)“I'm pleased that he's going to jail, but I don't think the sentence is just,” said Laursen's sister, Lynne McCutcheon. “We need to do some mandatory minimum sentencing.”
The Crown had asked for a four-year sentence.
Const. David Bickle, who was chasing Danyliuk that night, is facing dangerous driving charges and is also accused of not following police procedure during the pursuit.
Bickle appears in court next month.
