1. PIPELINE SIT-IN

More than 1,000 people have signed up to participate in a mass sit-in on the front lawn of the B.C. legislature on Oct. 22 to protest the proposed Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipelines and oil tankers.

2. WINTER WEATHER

Winter weather hit parts of B.C. over the weekend. Several centimetres of snow hit Grouse Mountain, which could mean an early start to the ski season. In northeastern B.C., snowfall warnings were issued in Fort Nelson and Stone Mountain Park, with as much as 25 centimetres of snow expected to fall by Monday.

3. BY-ELECTIONS CALLED

Prime Minister Stephen Harper calls three by-elections for Nov. 26, including Victoria. Conservative Dale Gann, NDP Murray Rankin, Liberal Paul Summerville and the Green Party's Donald Galloway are competing to replace Denise Savoie, who announced her resignation in August, citing health reasons.

4. FORMER B.C. MP IN ISRAELI CUSTODY

Former New Democrat MP Jim Manly was taken into custody after Gaza-bound aid ship was commandeered by Israeli troops. According to his wife, Manly is refusing to sign a waiver that would trigger his release.

5. $700 FOR KHADR

Jack Hallam, a gay activist from Salt Spring Island, is leaving Omar Khadr $700 in his will. Hallam says the thinks the man was mistreated by Canadian and U.S. officials, and hopes he can use the money to further his education.

6. NEW CANDIDATES

The Liberals and New Democrats chose new candidates over the weekend. Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton will be the Liberal party candidate in his home riding in next year's provincial election. Sierra Club B.C. executive director George Heyman won the NDP nomination for Vancouver–Fairview.

7. VIOLENT OFFENDER’S RELEASE

Danny Perrault — a violent repeat offender who has a history of manslaughter, sexual assault and robbery — is scheduled to be released on Oct. 22. Perrault is considered a moderate to high risk to re-offend.

8. PIPELINE MARCH

Hundreds of University of B.C. students, faculty and community members will voice their opposition to proposed pipeline developments on Oct. 23 in a "Defend our Climate" march to the 4th Avenue constituency office of Premier Christy Clark.
