The man charged with the Halloween slaying of a B.C. teenager has been denied both bail and an application to have his trial moved to Vancouver.

Matthew Foerster, 26, is charged with the first-degree murder of Taylor Van Diest, of Armstrong, B.C.

Van Diest was found severely beaten the night of Oct. 31, 2011, and died later in hospital from her injuries.

Foerster, of Cherryville, B.C., had sought bail Thursday in B.C. Supreme Court in Kelowna, where he also applied to have his trial venue changed. Bail is almost never granted in first-degree murder cases.

The Crown plans to have Foerster tried in Kelowna.

Some of the victim's family attended the hearing and were relieved at the outcome.

"To think that, you know, he even applied for bail is beyond me," said the teen's mother, Marie Van Diest. "I thought you know, who you kidding? But he [applied] and was denied and I found that very satisfying."

Foerster was arrested in Collingwood, Ont. in April. His father was arrested at the same time at his home in Cherryville and was charged with obstruction of justice.

No trial date has been set.
