B.C. apple growers are hoping for a strong market price after four 'devastating' years. (Matthew Mead/Associated Press/Canadian Press)The apple harvest is in full swing in B.C.’s Okanagan, and producers say growing conditions this year have been ideal. B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association president Kirpal Boparai says warm days and cool nights in recent weeks have produced a bright red color in the fruit.
"[We’ve seen] very few apples that are green — most, it's nice and red and has that blush to it, so we're kinda excited about that," Boparai said.
"I think this year has been really good. I would say Mother Nature has been so far on our side, and we've been good that way." He’s hoping growers get a good price for their harvest this year.
"[The] last four years have been devastating," Boparai said. "So I'm hoping that everybody makes a few cents because it's been four devastating years for our growers." He says it's still too early to tell how much producers will get for their harvest.
In Ontario, an early frost destroyed around 80 per cent of the apple crop.
Boparai says that could push up demand — and the price — of B.C. apples.
