A 53-year-old B.C. man has been charged with counselling a depressed woman to kill herself, and police are asking to hear from anyone else who might have received similar advice.

Police began an investigation last week after a family member brought a woman in her 40s suffering from neck injuries to Abbotsford police after she survived a suicide attempt.

"It was apparent that these injuries were the result of a ligature or some kind of rope or equivalent and that there was a man ... who had counselled her to commit suicide," said Abbotsford police spokesman, Const. Ian MacDonald.

Charged is Kenneth William Carr.

Investigators said the woman is suffering from depression, but was not otherwise ill.

"What's concerning to us is this woman in her 40s has not been diagnosed with a terminal illness. She is not facing a medical crisis," MacDonald said.

Police searched the home of the accused in a quiet Abbotsford neighbourhood where he lived in a basement suite, MacDonald said.

Following the search, MacDonald said, investigators wanted an appeal to go out for anyone else who may have been counselled to kill themselves.

Carr remains in custody and is to make a court appearance Wednesday.

The woman is recovering from her injuries.
