B.C. man pleads guilty to manslaughter in father's death

A 24-year-old Nanaimo man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death of his father.
Brendan Menard was scheduled to go on trial Tuesday for second-degree murder in the death of Tony Menard.
The popular Nanaimo businessman was shot with a .22-calibre rifle during a camping trip with family and friends over the 2010 Canada Day long weekend.
Defense lawyer Bert King says the plea means his client admits to causing his father’s death — but it wasn’t intentional.
"For murder, you get life in prison," King said. "And he decided that he wished to get this behind him."
King says a Supreme Court judge will hear what happened and why during a sentencing hearing scheduled to take place later this month.
"You're going to hear in the sentencing that there was nothing but a good relationship between this young man and his father. You're going to hear about epilepsy and what happened that evening," King said.
Menard’s sentence could range from life in prison to no jail time at all.
