The 911 phone call made by the man accused in the death of a Surrey senior was played in Surrey Provincial Court Monday.

Driver Gurjit Dhillon made the call after running down 83-year-old Pritam Benning at a bus stop three years ago.

"There's an accident. I hit a person. I need an ambulance right away," Dhillon is heard saying.

“You hit one person that was walking, right,” the 911 operator asked.

“No,” Dhillon replied. “It was on a bus stop. Something happened to my car. It just went out of control."

Dhillon then described the victim as bleeding heavily from open wounds on broken ankles. The recording ended with the operator telling Dhillon to wrap up the wounds in a cloth or towel.

Benning died five days later in hospital.

Charges of street racing causing the death were dropped on Monday because of unreliable witness testimony.

Some witnesses reported seeing Dhillon racing with a yellow Corvette just before Benning was hit.

Dhillon, 28, still faces a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

"I guess they figure they have a better case by going with dangerous driving," the victim's son, Manjit Benning, said outside court Monday.

When asked how he felt about the Crown decision, Benning said he agrees it's better to go with "the more sure deal" in the prosecution.

The trial does not resume again until November.
