Five members of a family from Calgary are in hospital in serious condition after a crash early Saturday morning on Highway 1 in B.C.'s southern Interior.
Police say a husband and wife and their three children — a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl — were injured when their car drove off the road at about 5:30 a.m. PT.
"The crash occurred on Highway 1 near Blind Bay," said RCMP Cpl. Damon Werrell.
"The occupants of the vehicle received very serious and life-threatening injuries. The investigation is still in its preliminary stages. We do not believe that alcohol was a factor at this time."
Werrell says some members of the family were taken to hospitals in Kamloops and Kelowna, while at least one person was airlifted to Vancouver.
He says it’s believed the family, bound for Vancouver, left Calgary on Friday and drove through the night.
"The preliminary investigation is showing us that the vehicle just drove off the road," Werrell said. "They didn’t crash into anything; they just drove off the road."
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
