A man who pleaded guilty in a car crash that killed two young brothers and left a third paralyzed has been fined $1,500.
Ryan Miller, 31, hit a van stopped in the HOV lane of Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge, just east of Vancouver, in November 2008.
A judge handed down the fine for driving without due care and attention in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam on Wednesday.
The judge said there were no words to describe the impact of the accident.
She said the accident was the result of a momentary lapse of attention, and Miller simply didn’t see the stopped van in time.
The judge said the fine was not the value put on lives lost, and the cost to all parties involved has been incalculable.
All three boys were sitting in the third seat of the family van when their mother stopped the vehicle in the HOV lane as smoke started to pour through the vents.
Police say a BMW rammed the vehicle, injuring two adults and killing nine-year-old Andrew Moeller and his six-year-old brother Matthew. The crash also left eight-year-old Karl Moeller paralyzed.
